The Enchanted Food Forest

This camp is now full. Please email us to be added to the waiting list.

OVERVIEW

Together as team, we will walk through the portal from ordinary life to the mysterious, hidden world of Nature, creating a food forest with all the elements that weave together the web of life.

From rich, microbial soil to the deep roots of plants, the infinite mushrooms network to the lush foliage of cover crops, from the expansive tentacles of berry bushes, all the way to the tall stalk of growing canopied fruit trees. We will be unraveling the secrets of a mature forest ecosystem and how we can learn from Nature's millions of years of adaptation to grow food, medicine, and fuel to support human communities. As we expand on the existing Edible Forest Pathway at Willowell, we will learn from the food web that already exists surrounding us and how we can become friends & allies in creating habitat for our furred and feathered friends!

We will:

  • Play games that explore the different levels of the ecosystem by embodying animals

  • Learn ancient & modern day interactive stories

  • Sing songs

  • Work on craft projects that help create animal homes & habitats

  • Inoculate logs & mulch for edible mushroom growth

  • Have our hands in the soil, planting trees, bushes, crops, connecting to the web of life

Come get dirty and play like an animal in its ecosystem!

Yulia Klimento

Yulia is trained as a conservation ecologist from McGill University with a BSc. in Biodiversity Conservation; she has lived & worked across various continents, exploring native biodiversity and local ecosystems. Her work has focused on pollinators & seed dispersers, coral reef restoration, micropastic pollution in freshwater environments, regenerative local food systems, decolonization & food sovereignty. It has become her greatest passion to help conserve the Earth we call home through love & reverence. She has found deep purpose in working with young humans to become resilient & eco-literate in these changing times and is thrilled to teach at Willowell with New Roots & Wren's Nest. She has previously worked with kindergarteners to young adults to explore the infinite curiosities embedded in natural environments and how to become caring stewards. Yulia emphasizes the importance of an experiential learning environment for kiddos to orient themselves within the web of life. She functions through lenses of permaculture, systems theory, and deep ecology. Her goal is to work on blossoming our creativity & imagination to collectively reimagine how we can move forward into a future of restoration in an era of climate change!

Jose Rodriguez

Jose is a veteran that is passionate about finding ways of exploring the inner-self by following his heart and gaining different skills & traits along the way. He was a hovercraft mechanic in the Navy, a youth swimming instructor at the YMCA, a dive instructor on the Island of Kaua’i, a beekeeper in a local food forest farm on Kaua’i, a part of a team working on coral reef restoration, and finally became a agroforestry technician on a Kilauea culinary campus. He now works in conservation as a forest technician for carbon sequestration and as a local carpenter. He has worked with kids from all ages in the water teaching them how to trust themselves, and believe in their inner power and capabilities. He is super excited to bring the waterworld with him, so that our imagination & creativity can fly as we do in the ocean. As the world is changing fast, he feels the importance of working together with the younger generation, teaching and learning from one another. Guiding them to understand the importance of carrying hard & soft skills, how to listen to their inner guidance, face their fears to unlock doors of opportunity, removing self imposed limits to our spirit, and teaching them the art of listening to & communicating with Mother Nature.
