Patterns in Nature: Math Camp
OVERVIEW
This is a funny year for insects out in the woods: the 17-year and 13-year cicada broods are both emerging at once. That doesn't happen very often...one of the patterns this year hasn't happened since 1803! Have you ever wondered why cicada broods always emerge after a prime number of years?
That's the sort of question we'll be digging into at STEM camp, combining nature and the wonder of math.
This will be a week of spending time in nature, with an eye for mathematics. We'll be exploring the hidden mathematics of the natural world, playing math games, and learning how to both measure and estimate things in nature.
If you love math, this is a camp with you in mind. But if you have some doubts about math, come try it out in a summer field with the accepting, brilliant and caring Ethan Mitchell. No worksheets, no problem sets, just flowers and trees and insects. Because math is everywhere, actually...
